Meet the Black Widow - Part II
With the JL event date set it was time to get to work with the setup and coordination of all that needed to happen leading to the big day. First order of business was to contact all the bar owners to let them know the show was on followed by calls & meets with the media. One of the local TV stations offered to cover the event and air it as a segment on an upcoming show during prime time. The Leaf-Chronicle (local paper) was great and came thru offering free pre/post-event coverage. A call to my buddy at 102.5 The Party got us hooked up with Scotty O'Brien, one of the areas most popular radio personalities. He was ultimately key in promoting the event and having folks come to the store to fill out an entry form for the J Lee Signature McDermott Cue Giveaway. Our friends at Budweiser (Ideal Distributing) came thru with banners and promo items for all the bars involved. The idea here was to have each bar hold a tournament and then each winner, in addition to whatever they won for that tourny, would get an invitation to play J Lee during the event at our store.
I'll fast forward here to say that, luckily, everything came together with no problems. The few days prior to the event were spent doing final follow-ups with everyone that had a part in the big show and getting the store and a table ready as well as briefing our salespeople on what to expect. The one thing that never got covered was security and as it eventually turned out, none was needed.
Now comes the big day. We're early into the store for final setup and last minute stuff. JL is due at 11am and the gig is booked for 4 hours. People start filtering in around 10:15a and by 11a there's about 40 people inside - but no JL! Around 11:15 I step outside to yak with the small crowd out there. Someone says, there she is, and I see JL walking down the street, case in tow and walking with - George Breedlove!
Now I have to say this was unexpected and I find that he came along to "help out" - and he really did.
