Once the initial meet and greet and all that sort of stuff is done JL is mingling with the crowd, signing autographs and the usual celebrity type stuff. She asks if we should start off with some trick shots. Naturally all approve and she introduces her husband George. I have to say I've seen some fancy shooting in my day but my jaw dropped watching George shoot 1 handed at "moving" balls with the cue under one leg - and pocketing them! He entertained us for about 10 minutes then gave the stage to JL who proceeded to do about15 minutes of trick shots herself. I'd guess many have seen her do the shot where someone lays across the table and she shoots across their head to pocket a ball at the far end. Of course we used the TV reporter for that trick.
Following this we had the winners from the various local tournaments come in for their shot at JL in 9 ball. Anyone that won a game received an autographed cue ball. The rest got an autographed 8x10 of JL. I even played her and was on a roll running to the 8 where I rattled the pocket - with her goading me the whole time. Needless to say she won that one. The charity folks brought some of the kids in and they all got to play. It was great watching JL with the kids and she made sure they all had fun. I have to say that JL didn't just make an appearance - she did a great job of promoting donations, talking about the kids and just basically being a partner in the event.
Scotty from 102.5 drew the winner of the autographed cue (McDermott JL3) which was a lady from Nashville. Even got her on the phone after the live drawing (see avatar pic). He did a nice job all afternoon with the live broadcast from our place. This was followed by a short sit-down interview with JL by TV and finally an interview with the newspaper reporter. What was cool was that JL was zoned in on why we did the event (charity) and she keyed on that aspect which was golden. She also talked about the sport of billiards, her background and how she could relate with people with medical problems - having one herself (scoliosis).
As things were winding down (around 5ish and she was already over the 4 hrs we booked) one of our customers came to me and JL and offered to buy the table she did the exhibition on - provided she autographed it. Sooner done then said!
All in all we raised $1800 for the charity which exceeded my expectations. The event was a huge success and everyone enjoyed it. It's always nice to see a plan come together. The capper to this whole shindig was when George and JL were packing up their stuff and George invites my staff and I to dinner at the restaurant next door. An offer none of us could refuse. I think it was around 9pm when G and JL finally got in their car to head back to Nashville.
I know this is many years later but sometimes you can't thank people enough - Many thanks to George for helping out, JL for the great show and just being a real people-person, all the bars in Clarksville that participated, Scotty from 102.5, the Leaf-Chronicle and Channel 5 reporters, Ideal distributing (the Bud folks), all the folks that attended the event and everyone that contributed to raising money for a very worthwhile organization that helps seriously ill kids -
The Dream Factory.
